Base (no damage increasing skills/mods)
GEK DPS: 406.25 MH-82 HMG: 554.40
I'm not saying that the GEK is over-powered, or that Assault Rifles in general are overpowered - but after taking a good hard look at the math here I think it's safe to say that a Heavy Machine Gunner should be able to take down an Assault suit with a GEK fairly easily. Unfortunately, due to mass constraints - it's far easier for the Heavy to get gunned down simply because he can't move out of the way of the incoming rounds where as the Assault suit can.
The numbers only get weirder as you start tying in skills like Weaponry and the weapons' specific proficiencies, the DPS on the HMG always comes out higher but I've seen some scary **** come from people with a GEK.
If I were going to say anything I'd say dial the rate of fire down a bit - 12.5 rounds a second is about standard for a modern assault rifle but when it comes to in game statistics the damage gets pretty high.
Why do I say the damage is high? Well, let me explain:
The GEK has 60 rounds in the magazine, so given that it's rate of fire is 750rpm that equates to about 4.8 seconds of continuous fire.
That equals out to a grand total of 1,950 damage by the time you empty the magazine, and that's without any skills attached. Your standard Assault Suit only has 300 HP, total and your standard Heavy suit has about 750. So it's safe to say that one magazine from the GEK can go a -long- way in terms of firepower.
Now, I know that no-one is a perfect shot and even more are beneath DMR accuracy, but when you only need a FIFTH of the magazine to hammer through a completely new player's Assault suit - **** can get a bit outlandish.
CONCLUSION
As I said, I don't think that the GEK is overpowered but at the moment there's really nothing that can compete with it bar the HMG, which is a specialization weapon. You can only use it if you're a Heavy at which rate you're taking a major hit to your speed in order to use the damned thing.
So what makes the GEK powerful, Aeon? It's versatility. Any suit can use it and it's ******* effective at what it does - requiring very little skill (SP skill, not player skill) to utilize and in the hands of a seasoned FPS veteran it is very powerful.
So what do we do about it?
There needs to be more weapons implemented that are effective in the same field. SMGs and Shotguns are specialist weapons, particularly. Sniper rifles and Laser rifles just as well, being long range weapons. Mass Drivers can be considered the same as they're more of a support weapon than they are a direct killing tool.
The only other competitor? The Heavy Machine Gun - and it just BARELY tops for a variety of reasons:
It's a specialist weapon, requiring a Heavy to operate
It's high capacity magazine is the trade off for a VERY slow reload time
It's damage output is favorable but in the shadow of the GEK it performs better in the long run
The above is only assuming that you don't have to reload in the midst of the battle
The heavy's high defense is a trade off for it's slow speed, making it an easy target for the GEK.
So, looking at that, it's understandable why someone would claim the GEK is OP - but the cold hard fact?
It's just so god damned versatile. |
